I always understood that Opry "tradition" was that no drums had ever been used on the Opry and the Opry folks weren't about to change that and Bob Wills was the first to get away with having a drummer on stage. After being told at the last minute that he could not have drums, Bob quite firmly refused to play without them. He played with drums and the audience loved it, but it griped some butt with the Opry people and Bob was never invited back. I'll bet some of these other guys know more about the "drum" incident than I do.
