The Squeakin' Deacon

The deacon was gone when I got there. Still alive, I believe, but he stopped doing his radio show. Before that, he was doing an hour a day out of his trailer. He had a remote rig with a couple of turntables and a mike. The spots were dropped in at the studio. The lineup when I arrived (as I recall) was Dick Haynes at the Reins in morning drive, and Charlie Williams, Biff Collie, Bill Patterson and Brad Melton filling out the rest of the day. They all tracked an hour a day, and we played those on the overnight. Then Biff went to Nashville, and Ted Quillin came on board for noon-3P. Then Charlie Williams went to Nashville. He was a serious songwriter, and those were the days when Nashville had just started demanding Tennessee residence as a condition of success in commericial country music. They were cutting the word "Western" out every chance they got every way they could.
