Isn't this a great find! Very similar thing happened to me. I loved radio so much I didn't care what I played, so it didn't matter that I was working for Country King KFOX in Long Beach in 1969. Didn't care for country much, with one big exception...I loved some of the oldies in the mix from this group called Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. Then this guy named Merle Haggard, whom I didn't think too much of either, came out with this new LP called "Tribute to the best damn fiddle player," and I realized what a great musician he was. The more I learned the more I liked it. Now, more than 30 years later, and 20 years out of radio, I have a western swing and fiddle collection on CD and vinyl that includes most of what has been recorded and released in the genre. In the rare moments that I listen to country radio, I am amazed at how the industry destroyed its own roots trying to constantly increase its audience.
