You know there is another explanation too that I overlooked. Back in those days it was very common for the bandleader to hire a vocalist. I believe Paul Whiteman had Bing Crosby singing in his orchestra and then later Bing went on his own. Of course then there was Frank Sinatra with the Tommy Dorsey band and he went off on his own too. Bob saw himself as a bandleader and a fiddle player first and foremost and singer after that. There isn't a lot of modern music acts that hire a singer anymore. Kind of a thing of the past, with a few exceptions in the rock, blues and jazz worlds of music. Hope this helps.
