On May 16, 1920 Laura Lee Owens was born near the Canadian River in Oklahoma. She became the first female singer with Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. She formed her first band, the Prairie Pioneers, after her graduation from high school in Kansas City in 1938. The following year she married her father's guitarist, Herb Kratoska. They moved to California, where they made thirteen movies. Shortly thereafter Laura divorced Herb and moved to Tulsa.She went to work with a regrouped Pioneers, known as the Sons of the Range, on Tulsa station KVOO. Jesse
