Old school thought was "Honky Tonks" were rough places that appealed to a low class of society. They were attracted to the simple 3 chord cheatin' songs and the mood of the joint usually full of losers drowning their sorrows. To me Bob seldom left you in a blue mood long. He must have been a great judge of his crowd, knowing how to stack his songlist and change if need be. The older and now gone bigtime players I knew had an impression that Beer drinkers were of the lower life or Honky Tonk folks, but real whiskey drinkers could be your Banker, Doctor, etc. with high class and never lose control and cause trouble. They also believed most fights started with band wives getting jealous and drunk. I know of several good players who quit because their wives became this type of problem for them. I believe Bob was way above doing Tonks and didn't want to be seen playing in one. But I bet he would go in one from time to time. Bob was way above most of those others who later became big in this field.
